Charles Schwab Challenge 2022 pick, predictions, terrain, odds, tee times: Golf expert says he picked Jordan Spieth

After running a major gauntlet in Tulsa, the PGA Tour is racing through Hogan’s Alley this week in the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club. Ben Hogan won the first two events at the Fort Worth, Texas course (1946 and 1947) and had three more victories there. Dallas native Jordan Spieth attempted to take on the role of his golfing idol at Colonial, winning once and finishing runner-up three times. The three-time major champion is among the favorites for Charles Schwab 2022, which kicks off on Thursday. Justin Thomas is set to play this week after winning the PGA Championship in a playoff match against Will Zalatoris last week, and Masters champion Scottie Scheffler will look to bounce back from a missed cut in Southern Hills. Collin Morikawa, Viktor Hovland and Sam Burns are also in the 2022 Charles Schwab squad, making them six of the top 10 players in the world. Jason Kokrak will also be on hand to try to defend his 2021 title.
Caesars Sportsbook lists Scheffler as the 10-1 favorite in its latest Charles Schwab Challenge 2022 golf odds, with Thomas just behind at 12-1. Spieth is rated at 14-1, with Morikawa (16-1) and Hovland (18-1) the only others at odds lower than 20-1. Burns (28-1) and Kokrak (40-1) are longtime contenders for the 2022 Charles Schwab title. Before you make any picks for the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge or any PGA Tour predictions, you really need to see what proven golf insider Sal Johnson has to say.
The esteemed golf insider has been in the game for many years and knows what it takes to win on the PGA Tour.
Ahead of last week’s PGA Championship, Johnson predicted that if Thomas got his putts right, he could definitely win. Thomas had his best week of the season on the greens, earning over 1.5 shots and ranking second in the field. The result? He beat Will Zalatoris in the playoffs to win his second major and his second PGA Championship.
In his previous series of predictions for SportsLine, Johnson won the Masters for the third time in four years. He backed Scheffler, saying he was “in a race where he’s been tough to beat, and I see him continuing at Augusta National.” The 25-year-old picked up his fourth victory of the season.
Now Johnson, the first “Inside the PGA Tour” producer and longtime ABC Sports golf producer who has worked with Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, has released his very confident picks and predictions for the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge ( see tickets on StubHub). The founder’s picks for GOLFstats.com, the world’s best golf stats database, will surely surprise you. You can only see them on SportsLine.
Charles Schwab Challenge 2022 Top Expert Picks
Shocking pick: Johnson fades Scheffler, who may need time to regroup after his disastrous run at Southern Hills last week. The world number one player had nine bogeys and a double bogey over his 36 holes and was on the sidelines for the weekend. Scheffler took a long time after his Masters win, and Johnson wonders if it was the best thing for him amid such a torrid run. “He looked rusty at the Byron Nelson and then looked completely lost at the PGA,” Johnson said of Scheffler, and the pundit isn’t counting on him much this week.
On the other hand, Johnson expects Spieth to continue rolling at Colonial, as he has been excellent at the start this season. The course rewards precision, both off the tee and on the green, and the three-time major champion is eighth in shots gained from tee to green and 24th in greens in regulation. Spieth is ranked ninth in the World Golf Rankings, and he won the RBC Heritage and was a runner-up at the Byron Nelson the following week. Then he finished tied for 34th at the PGA, so he seems to be in good shape and heading to a course he just loves.
The pundit will also be keen to see if Morikawa can raise a few eyebrows this week after flying under the radar lately. The two-time major champion was a runner-up at Colonial in 2020, and he already has five wins on the tour at age 25. He is fourth in the world rankings and has six top 10 finishes in 11 tournaments this season. He struggled to finish in T-55 at the PGA, but he’s in the top 16 on the tour in both driving precision and green regulation. Morikawa is sixth near the hole (34-foot-4) and ninth in scoring average, so he has the game to succeed in Fort Worth.
