Hot Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series gets 730 hp
The flagship sports car gets an extravagant rear spoiler to chase the Porsche 911 GT2 RS.
Mercedes-AMG gave the GT the Black Series treatment, making it the craziest and most expensive car in its existing lineup.
Billed as the swansong of this current generation model, the GT Black Series comes with a highly modified version of AMG’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 730 hp and 800 Nm for a 0-100 time. 3.2 seconds km / h.
In comparison, the next most powerful GT R generates 585 hp and 700 Nm for a slower time of 3.6 seconds. Like all GTs on sale, the transmission is via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission only driving the rear wheels.
In addition to being faster in a straight line, the GT Black Series is said to be more responsive thanks to a new flat-crank engine design derived from its motorsport program. Camshafts and exhaust manifold are also new.
To improve grip and handling, the GT Black Series is fitted with a carbon fiber spoiler, air separators and skirts installed around the car.
Chassis upgrades include adjustable suspension, tougher carbon-ceramic brakes and bespoke Michelin tires.
The interior, meanwhile, is adorned with lightweight door panels, bucket seats, and suede leather upholstery. Overall, the GT Black Series wants to have that visual and racy appeal of a racing car.
The closest conceptually rival is probably the Porsche 911 GT2 RS, whose 700bhp is derived from a twin-turbo flat-six driving only the rear wheels. The Porsche is however faster in terms of acceleration, with a time of less than 3.0 seconds.
With the GT R already costing 17 million baht in Thailand, expect the GT Black Series to be even more expensive in the vein of previous models. The GT is the sixth model to sport such an evocative and rare badge.
The first was the SLK55 in 2006, followed by the CLK63, SL65, C63 Coupé and SLS.
