TORONTO, May 11, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Questrade (www.questrade.com) – Canada’s leading online brokerage company – donate 1 million meals to his long-time charitable partner, Food Banks Canada to help neighbors in need in communities across the country.

The current COVID-19 pandemic – including the increase in business closings, layoffs and employment insurance claims – is having a ripple effect on food banks. Many are already reporting increased demand, both in calls from new client registrations and in weekly household visits just weeks after the self-isolation measures began.

In Canada, many of the more than 3,000 food banks and community organizations that Food Banks Canada supports from coast to coast report that they face significant challenges as they provide essential services to the country’s most vulnerable. Many have seen drastic cuts in their food collection efforts, as well as a significant drop in the number of volunteers.

“This is what Canadians are doing at a time like this: we are helping our neighbors,” said Edward Kholodenko, President and CEO of Questrade. “We hope that our contribution will help the most vulnerable citizens, who, even before the COVID-19 crisis, made more than a million visits per month to food banks across the country. With a third of food bank users being children, countless families more than ever need our help just to meet their basic daily needs. We are fortunate to be able to help.

At this time of year, the organization typically sees a decrease in the volume of donations, which, combined with pressure from COVID on grocery retailers, has put additional strain on the ability of food banks to obtain basic items. essential for those who need it most.

“Food Banks Canada is grateful to partners like Questrade, who have been there with us, both before and during this crisis,” said Chris Hatch, CEO of Food Banks Canada. “Questrade understood that there were people in Canada who were food insecure long before the pandemic and they understand the need is only growing now.”

Questrade encourages all Canadians who are in a position to help consider making a financial donation to www.foodbankscanada.ca.

“We believe that there is no greater investment, especially at the moment, than the one we are making in each other,” Kholodenko added. “Given our mission to help improve the lives of Canadians, we wanted to make a significant contribution now to help the growing number of Canadians in need. “
